WALKING

As part of the creative engagement programme of T100 2019 Welcome to the Kitchen Table, Kinetika delivered a series of creative workshops in and around Southend working with members of the public, pupils from Chase High School and diverse community groups.

As well as screen printing, photography and art journaling, a series of 27 silk flags were created using the universal theme of food which helped participants to celebrate the rich diversity of culture and heritage from the area. Working with Kinetika artists, participants learnt the process of how to translate their ideas into designs and then how to apply wax and dye to make the final flag.

The resulting designs looked fantastic as they were carried on the T100 walks all around the area, and highlighted what a wonderful variety of different cultures there are locally.

The designs show foods and culture from (in no particular order):
China, Czech Republic, France(x2), Malaysia, Spain, UK (x3), Ukraine, England & Wales, Hindu (x3), Jamaica, Bangladesh (x2), Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Albania, Belarus, BAPS Southend, Hungarian (x2), The International Group Southend, Jewish Connect Southend and Korea.

Thank you to everyone who generously shared their culture, traditions and artistic talents to make these wonderful flags!  If participants would like an image of the flag they created as a memento, just contact us.

The groups that took part were: Chase High School, Culture and Language Around The Table group, Jewish Connect, Welcome to the UK group, HMRC Southend BAPS, Southend Hindu Association as well as many members of the public.  The artists guiding them through the process were Sally Chinea, Jacci Todd and Lisa Meehan.

All of the flag designs are below, can you guess which one is which?  Click though using the arrows to see all 27!
