Cash's Well
There's broken glass all around the ancient temple, still sparkling. Do you know what it's from? More than a hundred empty bottles, maybe a thousand. All labelled and ready to be filled with 'Farmer Cash's Famous Medicinal Vange Water' A sick cow got better when it drank here, so they said. Cow or bull? Haha.
It's not a temple at all of course, it was advertising. Edwin Cash was the landlord of a London pub, with an eye for profit. Sunk the wells, bottled the magic, built the 'temple'.
But there was trouble upstream. Up on the hill where the kennels are now was an isolation hospital. Tuberculous dribble seeped through the ground, and the magical well was poisoned.
The temple left derelict, abandoned. Bottles unfilled. Kids would lob them from one end of the building to the other, to see the showers of glass.
Throw the old bottles at the lie. Watch them smash. It's fun!
Take yer eye out.
Now those kids are grown. They look around, trying to find one whole bottle, One memory unbroken, One vessel that couldn't be filled with a cure, to fill instead with a story.
But perhaps they smashed them, every single one.
