Ten Pound Poms
Bustling and pushing my way through the crowd, I held up my £10 excitedly. I had done it! I had saved up enough to begin a new life, away from all the troubles of the past.
As the Captain took my money, I grabbed my suitcase and bolted to the nearest free cabin. It wasn't much, but it was enough. I dumped my case on the bed, washed my face in the sink, then ran off speedily to make friends on the long journey. We all talked about our adventures to come, in the paradise that is Australia. I was so excited, I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs.
But as the ship departed, waves were crashing upon the hull, and unenthusiastic voices began to slither through my mind. Regrets flashed like shooting stars, as I thought of my friends and family. I started to feel nauseous, moving up and down to the melody of the waves. All I could see was the far side of Thurrock drifting off into the distance as we slowly pulled away from home.
What life have I bought for myself? Will it be everything that was promised? Will the beaches look like Hawaii? Will I be rich?
