Windrush
My name is Charlotte. I am 16 years old. I am standing at the very bottom of the ladder that leads to the large boat bound for Britain. Mother and father have £1000, but will that be enough to survive?
"I'm scared," I cry to my mother. "What if something goes wrong?" We are starting over - a new life, a new country, a new home. Everything will be new!
"Don't worry," mother replies.
"But I'm gonna miss everyone!" I stand amongst the crowd of excited people. It appears to me that I am the only person scared. I've been told that where we are going is grey, and it rains all the time. There are dustbins tipped over, and people shout and scream as if they were at a boxing match. My tummy is filled with 1000 butterflies. I can't stop thinking about the beach, where your troubles just walk away into the horizon.
I look at my mother, and her face looks like the beach, all hope and distance. I'm scared, but when I look at her, I can see that it might be okay.
Should I step onto this ship? My future now stands before me.
