Map: 8. 150630 Tilbury & Chadwell schedule v3
Starting at the new Gateway Academy, you head first to Chadwell Place, home of prominent Puritan James Temple, governor of Tilbury Fort and one of the signatories of Charles I’s death warrant in 1649. You will pass the 15th Century Sleeper’s Farm, and then visit the graveyard of the parish church of St Mary where the graves of Elizabeth Manning and Kadzuo Yamazaki lie. The second half of the walk includes a visit to one of the country’s finest historical monuments, Tilbury Fort, built by Henry VIII to defend London from attacks from the sea, as well as the Tilbury Cruise Terminal where the Empire Windrush first docked in 1948, bringing the first of a wave of migrants from the West Indies to the UK.
You don’t need to walk the full 10 miles if you don’t want to – pick up/drop off points are indicated in green below. The original approx walk timings are below for your reference.
The main points are:
- 12.00 Set off from Gateway Academy.
- 13.30 Visit the historic Tilbury Fort (2 miles), the best preserved star-bastioned fortress in the UK.
- 14.30 Leave Tilbury Fort and pass Tilbury Cruise Terminal, the migration hub for millions of people since the 1920s.
- 16.00 Brief stop at Gateway Academy (5.5 miles).
- 16.45 Visit Chadwell Place (6 miles).
- 18.30 Visit Chadwell St Mary Library for a refreshment stop (and maybe learn about the historic Sleepers Farm and nearby St Mary’s Churchyard where Elizabeth Manning and Kadzuo Yamazaki are buried).
- 19.15 Return to Gateway Academy.
