In the late October half term, we teamed up with sound artist, beatboxer and DJ, Jason Singh alongside T100 Young Ambassadors from our partners U-Turnships for a sound production project inspired by Thurrock’s landscapes.
Jason hosted workshops allowing the young musicians to get hands-on using a range of specialist microphones to make field recordings of nature and the built environment along the Thames Estuary. Squeaky gates, rumbling floodgates and the crunch of shingle all provided a rich variety of sounds.
Using a range of microphones, Jason and the young people discovered and collected new sounds alongside and inside the Thames Estuary. From there, we headed to the studio at U-Turnships to start working on sound productions which sample these new sounds and showcase the creativity of our local young people.
The recordings were then turned into samples and tracks, which provided the foundation for the young people’s original music productions. We look forward to seeing where the musical exploration continues and finding opportunities to share the creations more widely during the 2025 T100 festival.
