Soundscape Installation

As part of T100 Sounds, a new, multi-channel immersive soundscape was commissioned and installed at St Clement’s Church, West Thurrock, RM20 4AL from Friday 7 July to Sunday 9 July.

The immersive soundscape by filmmaker Fotis Begklis is made up of four mesmerizing pieces which interweave voices and sounds recorded by members of the local Thurrock community and East Tilbury Primary School. 

Inspired by long walks, this installation juxtaposes the rich tapestry of Thurrock’s landscape and the church’s distinctive location along the urban, gritty, post-industrial graffiti wall walk. Enter the church to become enveloped in multiple layers of entangled sounds. 

From the rustle of leaves in the nearby woods to the gentle lapping of the river’s edge; from the meditative sounds of walking to the immense roaring industrial estates, every sound captivates your senses. 

With its Grade I listing and boasting a rich history dating back to pre-12th Century, St Clement’s Church was the stunning setting for the wonderful soundscape installation in 2023. This idyllic site now sits among the industry dotted along this stretch of the Thames.
