Map: Thurrock100-Walk5 13 July
This is a circular walk around Chafford Hundred and South Stifford. The walk begins at Chafford Gorges Nature Park, a 200-acre nature reserve managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust. The site includes two Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
You continue through the gorges to South Stifford and then on to St Clement’s Church, which featured in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral. After visiting the church you will then continue to Chafford Hundred, on to part of the Mardyke Way, and then back to the nature park.
You don’t need to walk the full route (around 10 miles) if you don’t want to – there are a series of pick up/drop off points clearly indicated for each walk which are in green below. The original approx walk timings are below for your reference. The main points are:
- 12.00 Set off!
- 13.15 Visit Grays Chalk Pit (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) and Lion Gorge (2 miles), (do you know about the quarrying history of the site and its importance today?). Take care here!
- 14.30 See St Clement’s Church (4 miles), featured in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
- 15.00 Walk along the edge of the quarry and see panoramic views of Lakeside Shopping Centre. Take care crossing West Thurrock Road.
- 16.30 Refreshment stop at the Dog & Partridge, North Stifford (7 miles).
- 17.30 Leave the Dog & Partridge.
- 19.00 Arrive back at Chafford Gorges Nature Park.

Accessibility
