We set out from the hexagonal 17th century dovecote at High House and visit the historic Purfleet Heritage Centre inside one of five gunpowder stores built on the Thames in the 18th Century, before exploring the award-winning RSPB bird sanctuary at Rainham Marshes. Built on ancient marshland once used as a firing range, it’s home to an extraordinary range of wildlife.
