In Other People’s Shoes: Take a Walk, a suggested route in East Tilbury

Tues 22 September 2020

Read our COVID-19 UPDATE HERE

Booking for this walk is now closed but you can follow the route to do the walk on your own.

Wherever you are, we invite you to make a Mandala between 12-27 September and share with us using #T100Calling or in our Facebook group.

Today, the mandala theme is In Other People’s Shoes!  Wear someone else’s shoes for the day, what does it feel like?  What happens when you are walking?

We invite you to take a favourite pair of shoes and share stories with your family, reflecting on the journeys you and others have travelled on foot, then design a shoe mandala.

Download your free Mandala Activity Pack here for inspiration.

In Other People’s Shoes gallery  Click the link to see mandalas made by the T100 community in preparation for this theme.

For more inspiration, check out the FREE digital theatre experience In Her Shoes, a participatory digital project by Blown Fuse Theatre.

It consists of immersive binaural audio and accompanying video imagery, launching on Monday 21st September 2020. All you need is a pair of headphones and to visit their website to step into the shoes of some of Thurrock’s most inspiring women.

A suggested walk route is below if you’d like to follow it yourself in your own time. The route takes you from Thurrock Nature reserve, a popular bird watching site, along the gravel path with wonderful views of the lake. Adjacent to this you can see the train line which runs between Stanford and East Tilbury stations. You can expect to see an array of wildlife including ducks, geese and swans.

The walk ends on the green behind Bata Memorial Park where you can imagine the journeys others have travelled.  Learn about the history of Bata in the area, and abroad, from the Bata Heritage Centre.

  • Terrain: The ground underfoot is mainly gravel on this walk, there will be a small amount of grassland and some pavements. The walk is pushchair accessible, there are however a number of turn-styles (these are wide enough for a double pushchair to fit through) and some cattle grids at the nature reserve. Some of the grassland is uneven and quite bumpy.

Accessibility

This walk is accessible for most wheelchairs and pushchairs. The walk leader has completed this walk with her children in a double buggy. However please note that there are many turn styles on route which would not be accessible for larger wheelchairs.

Please note:
You need to choose walks within your capabilities; especially if walking in a self-directed manner. If walking with us, our walk leaders are experienced but must take your word that you are sufficiently fit for the grade of walk you have chosen.
Due care has been exercised in organising the walks, however Kinetika, the funders and associated partners of the project cannot accept liability for loss, accident or injury caused to any person following the routes, especially unsupervised. Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Thurrock 100 walks are of different lengths and on different terrain. Some are mainly on footpaths, and others mainly on footpaths where ground may be uneven.  If this walk doesn’t suit you, there is probably another one that will.

What to take

Be prepared!  Face masks are advisable if you wish to use public toilets and essential if you wish to use local shops or are travelling via public transport.

Please ensure that you are properly equipped for all walks. The weather can be unpredictable so bring waterproof clothing and/or sun hats and sun cream – it’s best to be prepared for everything!

Walking boots/shoes are recommended, but otherwise please wear suitable and comfortable footwear- best to leave open-toe sandals or high heels at home.  Make sure you bring a packed lunch, if necessary, and plenty to drink.
