Canvey Island ramble with lunch on the sea front

Walk 7 of T100 Welcome to the Kitchen Table

A varied ramble taking in sites of historical significance on Canvey Island, offering views of the estuary, mudflats and industrial landscapes. The route takes in venues that are important to the unique local music heritage, particularly to what has become known as ‘Thames Delta Blues’.

Schedule

Meeting point: External paved area by main entrance to Benfleet Railway Station, South Benfleet, Benfleet SS7 1NE. (NB For earlier breakfast and beverages, there is a cafe at rear of station)
10.15 am: Registration
10.30 am: Walk starts
12.00 noon: Canvey Club on High Street, stop for drink if it’s open!
1.00 pm: Arrive Eastern Esplanade for lunch stop. Seafront catering options, picnic benches and amusements
2.45 pm: Possible stop for drink & to use facilities in the Lobster Smack Pub/Holehaven Point
3:45 pm: Visit the Dutch Cottage Museum, Canvey Road
5-5:15 pm: Walk ends
End point: Return to Benfleet Station.Post-walk refreshments can be enjoyed at the Barge Gladys, Ferry Road, Benfleet Creek

Terrain: Mainly pavements and footpaths across flat terrain, including accessing the sea wall path which incorporates occasional short flights of steps. As a result, the route is not suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users. Also, unavoidably, some of the route is on a pathway alongside a busy road and a couple of busy roads must be crossed.

Parking: NCP car park at Benfleet Station and nearby Council School Lane car park (600 spaces)

Accessibility

The terrain is mainly pavements and footpaths across flat terrain, including accessing the sea wall path which incorporates occasional short flights of steps. As a result, the route is not suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users. Also, unavoidably, some of the route is on a pathway alongside a busy road and a couple of busy roads must be crossed.

Thurrock 100 walks are of different lengths and on different terrain. Some are mainly on footpaths, and others mainly on footpaths where ground may be uneven. If this walk doesn’t suit you, there is probably another one that will.

What to bring

Please ensure that you are properly equipped for all walks. The weather can be unpredictable so bring waterproof clothing and/or sun hats and sun cream – it’s best to be prepared for everything!
Walking boots/shoes are recommended, but otherwise please wear suitable and comfortable footwear- best to leave open-toe sandals or high heels at home. Make sure you bring a packed lunch, if necessary, and plenty to drink.
