A Lost Jetty
The Mardyke is a man-made river. A drainage system across the fenland. I got a drainage ditch that runs through my garden, that's part of the Mardyke. Sometimes, when it overflows, there are large puddles on the roads.
In the past, sailing ships would come right up from the Thames. A farmer found the remains of an old wooden jetty in his field. Perhaps it was once a port? As I sit here, I can imagine them loading and unloading their supplies and crops.
I see the water glistening before my flashing eyes. I smell the weird smell of the river, and the wonderful smell of grass. It smells of fresh air and the liquid light of the sun. I can hear the sound of the river. I can see trees and bushes with lots of leaves on them. I hear birds singing and tweeting. I hear grass moving, and water flowing down the river.
The water is quite filthy as is beside all the grass and wildlife. I hope I don't fall into the river. Children used to play here in the past. As I sit here, I can imagine them fishing in the river. But the danger is, I might fall into the water.
It is a sad danger.
