High House
We have samples of all the wallpaper from the old house, would you like to see? They're beautiful. You can see the whole history in these tiny scraps of paper. People lived here. They chose these patterns, these colours, these textures. Here, feel them. Paper from the different times feels different.
We've collected many things found on this site, and we keep them safe. Times change, places change, and every change leaves stuff behind. Look at these bottles, some of them have writing on. Look, Wingrove Royal Hotel, Purfleet, the name in moulded glass. Feel it. And here, the man who filled this oil-can was a Mayor of London, who gave medals to the gunners who shot down a Zeppelin. Here's a shoe from a horse, and a shoe from a man. Look at all these china souvenirs, they aren't from tourists, they're from soldiers.
We're on the high ridge, looking out over the lowlands. People think the land down there is reclaimed, but it's the opposite. It's quarried and dug out, biting into our grounds. Some of it is filled back in with rubbish from London. They sent us their rubbish to hide, we sent them manure from our farms to grow food. We aren't wasteful. We know what's important.
