Tilbury Fort - Guardian of London
I stand, solid as the king who had me built. I guard the river, with my shadow on the other side. I reach out, a brute star of water and stone. I stand firm on the marsh where nothing should stand. I have defended with swords, and with guns. I was built for an attack that never came, but have remained ready nevertheless, proving my worth in subsequent battles. I guard London.
I raised up my founder's daughter, as she rallied troops against the coming Armada. And later, when countryman turned against countryman, I chose a side and stuck by it. Even as the technology of war grew beyond my stone and the reach of my artillery, I played my part. Sheltering soldiers and their explosives on their way to lands I will never see. Men and supplies of two world wars passed through my tunnels on their way to battle.
In peacetime, children play and learn where soldiers slept. Tiny boats circle my moat. Cameras spin and point in place of guns, capturing actors as they tell stories of past dangers and imaginary worlds.
And all the time I stand, solid and quiet, hoping this peace will last. I was built for war, and through my many years of stone silence, I have seen how fast the world can change. Be ever vigilant, protect our peace.
