The Ancient Crossing
We used to come on a green bus, right into Tilbury Docks, for the ferry. For a lot of people, the ferry to Kent was the start of their holidays. There would be queues in the summer.
You could also take a day trip to Gravesend. A lot of people used to do that at the weekends, I daresay. We did it a lot. We did it couple of days ago too. It's only about five minutes across. They keep to time. They have to, or nobody would ever catch it. It's brilliant, especially if it's choppy.
It's a commuter route too, and has been for a long time. People took a ferry here to work in the paper mills. Of course, they also took a much older ferry on pilgrimages. And they took bodies across of those who died of the plague. There's been a crossing here for hundreds of years. You should go if you get a chance, it doesn't take long to cross now, and you don't need to have the plague.
You took your flags over didn't you, last year? Yes, and the ferry broke down, but we went to the pub in Gravesend. It was quite an adventure.

What is on the other side? What is in Gravesend now? Well, there's shops, and a lot of places of interest. They've got that woss-er-name there, innit? Pocahontas. She was reported to have come from there. No, she died there, didn't she?
