Your own personal Railway
"Hello, I'm a train. I live a very exciting life - not! Going 3 miles forward and 3 miles back, on a continuous loop. Yes it's very boring, but that's my life."
Backwards and forwards, tiny railways all over Thurrock. Deep in chalk quarries, carrying stone on private rails. Through hidden tunnels, or watched by children as they rattle around in the pit.
Railways seem so permanent, their tracks fixed and solid. But in wartime, Canadian experts could lay secret railways in the night to carry essential supplies, and whip away the tracks by morning.
And of course, even solid railways ceased to be used. Chalk tunnels filled in and buried, metal recycled.
Corringham Light Railway, now silent, was the shortest railway in the country, carrying workers to Kynoch's explosive works, and back to their segregated huts. Later, it carried workers to Coryton, oil and supplies for war. The last train ran in 1952. You can see the remains of the line as you walk, if you know where to look.
